AACC Adding Women's Cross Country, Women's Golf
Both programs to compete in NJCAA DII
ARNOLD, Md. – Anne Arundel Community College is adding women's golf and women's cross country to its varsity sports offerings, it was announced Wednesday by Athletic Director Duane Herr '05. Women's golf will begin competition in the spring of 2025, while women's cross country will begin competition in the fall of 2025. Both sports will compete in Division II of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
"With a goal of expanding opportunities for student-athlete participation, I am excited for the return of women's cross country and to welcome women's golf as an official sport," said Herr. "Our women's cross country program maintains a history of success with expanded opportunities coming back at the Division II level. With the growth of the sport of golf across the nation, and recent addition of Division II women's golf within the NJCAA, I am thrilled that AACC will be a part of the growth."
Two women participated with the AACC men's golf team in the 2024 season, seeing Ela Simpson (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) become the first women's golf NJCAA All-American in AACC history. The addition of a varsity golf program for women will offer interested student-athletes a full schedule of matches and tournaments as well as athletic scholarship opportunities.
The Riverhawks are bringing back women's cross country after a brief hiatus. AACC discontinued the program after the 2022 season due to few opportunities for meaningful competition as a Division III team. AACC has since elevated all varsity sports to the Division II level, which allows for athletic aid and will open up many more options for local and regional competition.
AACC has begun a search for head coaches of both programs. Interested applicants may find more information and apply at https://careers.aacc.edu/jobs/search.
Student-athletes interested in participating in either program are encouraged to complete a prospective athlete questionnaire at https://aaccathletics.com/recruitme.
