LARGO, MD – The Anne Arundel Community College men's soccer team saw it season come to a close in the semi-final round of the NJCAA Division III Region XX Tournament Friday, Oct. 28.
Taking on No. 2 seeded Prince George's Community College, the No. 3 seeded Riverhawks fell, 4-1.
This years NJCAA Division III Region XX Tournament ran from October 27-30 and was by hosted by Prince George's Community College with six teams entered:
No. 1 – Montgomery College
No. 2 – Prince George's Community College
No. 3 – Anne Arundel Community College
No. 4 – Howard Community College
No. 5 – Northern Virginia Community College
No. 6 – Potomac State College of West Virginia University
The Riverhawks began their tournament journey with a quarterfinal win on Thursday October 27, over Potomac State College – besting the Catamounts 5-1. Scoring for the Riverhawks were Azzi Riad (Queens, NY/Marina International), Oswald Nkimbi (Bowie, MD/Bowie) assisted by Brandon Long (Severn, MD/Old Mill), Mark Woodard added two for the day with an assist coming from Mayglin Estrada (Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala), and Robert Masters (Annapolis, MD/Old Mill) assisted by Nkimbi.
The win over the Catamounts advanced the Riverhawks to a semi-final match-up against the Owls of Prince George's Community College held on Friday October 28th.
The Owls were first to score in the semi-final match-up but Riverhawk Brandon Bustillo (Bowie, MD/Bowie) finished off an assist from Andrew Wick (Crofton, MD/Arundel) to tie the game, 1-1, at the end of the first half. Halfway through the second half the Owls found their rhythm and netted three unanswered goals - ultimately giving them the 4-1 win. The Owls would advance on to the finals and take down No. 1 seed Montgomery College, 1-0, earning them the NJCAA Division III Region XX Champion title.
For their tournament performances, sophomore Brandon Long (Severn, MD/Old Mill) and freshman Mark Jacoby (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop Spalding) were named to the 2016 Region XX Division III All-Tournament Team.
The Riverhawks finished with at impressive 12-6 record (8-4 conference), with All-Conference and All-Region Teams yet to be announced.
