ARNOLD, Md. — The Anne Arundel Community College softball team powered to a doubleheader sweep of Monroe College–Bronx on Sunday, taking the opener in five innings, 15–5, and outlasting the Mustangs, 21–18, in a marathon Game 2 at the AACC Softball Field Sunday afternoon.
Game One: AACC 15, Monroe 5 (5 inn.)
A nine‑run fourth inning broke open the opener as the Riverhawks scored in every frame and run‑ruled Monroe after five innings. Freshman Mariah Fitzhenry sparked the offense, going 2‑for‑2 with two doubles and four RBI. Ryleigh Smoot added a two‑run double and three RBI, while Jayda Betts scored three times.
Smoot earned her first collegiate win in the circle, working 3.1 innings with three strikeouts before Aubrey Cook closed out the game holding the Express hitless.
AACC's pressure on the bases — including five stolen bases in the opener — pushed the lead out of reach, while Monroe's pitching struggled with 12 walks and five wild pitches.
Game Two: AACC 21, Monroe 18
The second game turned into an offensive slugfest featuring 39 total runs, 29 hits and 14 errors. AACC scored in all six innings it batted, including a seven‑run fourth that proved decisive.
Smoot again headlined at the plate, going 3‑for‑4 with seven RBI and a double. Betts reached base repeatedly and scored five times, while Cook went 3‑for‑4 with two RBI. Fitzhenry added two hits, two RBI and scored three runs.
Cook earned her first collegiate win with 5.1 innings of work despite Monroe's 16‑hit output.
AACC is back in action on Saturday, March 7, in an 11 a.m. doubleheader at the College of Southern Maryland.
