Late Rally Falls Short, Volleyball Falls to Cecil
Riverhawks host Monroe University and Howard Saturday in tri-match
ARNOLD, Md. — The Anne Arundel Community College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to visiting Cecil College in Region 20 divisional action Wednesday night in Jenkins Gym. The Seahawks won by scores of 25–18, 25–13, and 25–22.
Emily Ezeiruaku led the Riverhawks with a balanced eight kills, four aces, five digs, and a block. Melissa Cunningham added four kills, eight assists, six digs, and a pair of blocks. Leah Tompkins chipped in with four kills and an ace, while Emily Shadle recorded a career-high 18 digs at libero.
The Riverhawks battled point-for-point early in the first set, pulling even at 11–11 on a kill from Hope Lewis. But Cecil strung together a late run behind Etta Harris and Kendra Watters, closing the set on a 7–0 push to win 25–18.
Anne Arundel couldn't get its offense going in the second frame, managing just five kills as Cecil's serving attack took over. The Seahawks delivered eight aces in the set, breaking it open for a 25–13 win.
The Riverhawks regrouped and played their best volleyball of the night in the third set, with Ezeiruaku serving four straight aces to ignite a rally that brought AACC from 18–13 down to a 19–18 lead. Despite the surge, Cecil steadied late and closed out the set 25–22 to secure the sweep.
Anne Arundel finished with 23 kills, seven aces, 36 digs, and six blocks as a team. Cecil, led by Harris' 12 kills and 4 aces, improved to 6–4 overall and 4–4 in Region 20 play. The Riverhawks dropped to 3–6 (1–4 Region 20).
AACC returns to action Saturday at Jenkins Gym with a tri-match against Monroe University and Howard Community College.
