COLUMBIA, Md. – Freshman Alyssa Simms scored with 11 seconds left on the clock to give the Anne Arundel Community College women's soccer team its second-straight NJCAA Region 20 DII title Saturday afternoon at Howard Community College. The second seeded Riverhawks avenged an early season loss to top seed College of Southern Maryland with a 3-2 victory.
Alaina Minefski played the ball into the box where it was deflected by a CSM defender directly to Simms, who spun around and shot for the game-winner in the 90th minute.
MacKenzie Baldwin and Emma Miga also scored for the Riverhawks, who will now host Sussex Community College in the NJCAA DII East District Championship game st 12 p.m. on Friday, November 7.
Baldwin scored the first goal of the game, tucking a right footer inside the left corner in the 12th minute.
Southern Maryland responded with a pair of goals in a six-minute span to take the lead in the 23rd minute.
Miga finished a one-on-one with the CSM goalie from a seemingly impossible low angle in the 38th minute to send the teams into halftime tied at 2-2.
The Riverhawks fended off a formidable effort by the Hawks in the second half, turning away six shots on net and benefitting from a CSM shot off the crossbar in the 60th minute and another off the post in the 75th minute.
AACC keeper Ryleigh Smoot finished with four saves, including a high-flying punch which deflected up off the crossbar in the 89th minute.
The Riverhawks led in corner kicks, 10-3, and outshot the Hawks, 21-17.
Miga, Simms, Smoot, and defender McKenzie Gilbert were named to the All-Tournament Team.
